A new strain of the virus that causes COVID-19, known as B.1.1.529, has been labeled "Omicron variant" by the World Health Organization and has been described as a "different concern."
It will take weeks for solid answers to such issues as re-infection, antibody resistance and vaccination - but for now, this is what we know so far about this new strain of SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The scientific variant known as B.1.1.529 was not widely known until November 24, when South African authorities reported to the WHO. It took the organization just two days to raise its profile and status.
"This variation has a large number of genetic mutations, some of which are related. Preliminary evidence raises an increased risk of re-infection with this variant, compared to other" distinct variants, "the organization said in a statement Friday.
"(These) variants were obtained at faster rates than pre-infection increases, suggesting that these differences may have the potential for growth."
From the morning of Nov. 29, exceptions found in at least 15 countries on five continents, including Canada. (Dutch regional broadcaster NOS reported that out of 600 passengers from two isolated flights from South Africa, 10% were tested for a certain version of the coronavirus.)
Media reports indicate that most of the confirmed cases are immunized, although South African doctors note that most of those infected are not vaccinated.

Less than 48 hours after the world discovered about B.1.1.529, now known as Omicron, many major governments imposed travel and travel restrictions on southern Africa.
The Omicron variant has not been seen in the United States yet, but government and provincial authorities say they are actively seeking it.
Both Pfizer and Moderna said that if the alternatives were actually more resistant to their vaccines than previous versions, they could develop and submit a modified vaccine within about 100 days.
New York government spokeswoman Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency and said that although Omicron has not yet been found in the state, "It is coming.
